Video Banner Case Study

The brief

Cohaesus, a multi-location based digital agency, turn experience-led tech into hard-working digital. The provide UX and design services to businesses, developing strategies, design experiences, build software teams and continuously improve business’ portfolios of digital products, tools and services. Cohaesus approached Digital Pie when they were looking to create a website banner for their site, a 4-loop banner, approximately 16 seconds in length.

How did we deliver?

We provided a shot list to Cohaesus, prior to the shoot so relevant business activities could be filmed. We had a phone call meeting, in which provided shot suggestions and examples of web banners. In this call, we discussed time-lapse content and shots we could get of employees working. The shoot was to take place prior to the event and will be filmed at the Fora office and Old-Street area. The final video was to be delivered in a format suitable for website upload, and this was discussed with Cohaesus' website provider to ensure a smooth transition.

On the day:

On the day, we filmed establishing shots of their London offices, including a time-lapse of Old Street roundabout, which the office was near. We filmed the office for some establishing shots, but we also took shots of staff members partaking in everyday work activities to show the natural environment of Cohaesus. We used a couple members of staff and set up some shots of them having a meeting, typing on laptops and staff socialising in break areas. Not only did we want to show their office but incorporate the team and put a face to the company. We also had to consider that web banners have to be a certain dimension in order to fit onto the web page - they are widescreen, so a lot of full res clips will be cropped top and bottom. This is something we had to consider when shooting the clips, and make sure our framing was suitable for the crop. We spent 2-3 hours filming in their office in order to capture as much footage as possible, so we had a lot to choose from in the final edit for their website.

Post-production

In terms of the edit, we had to be very selective of what clips to choose from. When creating a web banner, it is important to consider that you only have a few seconds to capture the audience, and all of this has to be done visually, without audio. One technique we integrated into the video was using a time-lapse clip. We chose a recognisable area in London, Old Street Roundabout, which was also close to the client’s office - this is a good way to capture the audience, as time-lapse footage is eye catching and by using a recognisable place, helps the audience relate to the brand. As dimensions of the banner were already considered when already considered when filming at the offices, there was no issue in re-sizing clips.

Another technique we used was to apply a black and white colour grade to the footage, and only highlight one colour within the shot. We used this technique as we had to factor in the fact that the video was to be used as background on a page, so we decided not to use full colour as it was important for any text to be clearly seen on the web page. To keep the video visually eye catching, we decided on using a pop colour to highlight focal points – something which wasn't too distracting, but still engaged the user.

Client Comment

Honestly thank you again for all of your hard work! We were so happy with the efficiency of the day and we are so happy with how both videos look! I have showed the wider team and have received nothing but compliments.
